Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

FWDC 3:   CHANGES IN FACULTY MEMBERSHIP ON HONORARY DEGREES ADVISORY COMMITTEE

EFFECTIVE: Spring Semester 2000, Upon Senate and Vice Chancellor Approval

CHANGES: Rescind the sentence in SD0887F which states that "The four Full Professors selected to the Distinguished Scholars Committee will also serve as the four elected members required on the Honorary Degrees Advisory Committee."

Amend SD3699S by deleting the section which established Faculty Handbook entry 10.3.2.2, "Faculty Representatives to Honorary Degrees Advisory Committee."

RATIONALE:
Chancellor Mullen and the UNCA Board of Trustees are pursuing a new process for developing a pool of distinguished and consenting candidates for Honorary Degrees from UNCA. The former Honorary Degrees Advisory Committee (HDAC) of the Board of Trustees is no longer functioning, so faculty representatives to it are no longer needed.

FACULTY HANDBOOK IMPACT STATEMENT:
The changes in the Handbook mandated by SD3699S last March establishing entry 10.3.2.2, "Faculty Representatives to the Honorary Degrees Committee" have not yet arrived at the
Handbook. So deleting 10.3.2.2 from SD3699S will have no practical effect on the printed Handbook. However, editorial changes from SD3699S as amended by this document should be reflected in an updated Faculty Handbook entry on page 137 reading as follows:

10.3.2.1 Distinguished Scholars Committee

Purpose

a. To select the person invited to be the Visiting Breman Professor of Social Relations, and to arrange for the visit

b. To select the Highsmith Distinguished Visiting Scholar and to arrange for residency.

c. To make a nomination to the Chancellor annually or when advisable for a recipient of the Oliver Max Garner Award, a distinction granted yearly by the Board of governors to that faculty member on one of the sixteen campuses who has "made the greatest contribution to the welfare of the human race" during the year.

d. To consider sponsorship of other scholars who may from time to time be available for temporary university duties.

Membership (SD0887F) The Senate shall elect four full professors from the faculty at large, after which the Chancellor shall appoint three members drawn from the full-time teaching faculty, one from each division. Terms of office are for two years. Service on the committee begins at the first faculty meeting of the fall semester and runs to the same time of the following year.

Reporting the committee shall report to the Senate annually, and shall deposit copies of any minutes in the Senate files. Recommendations to: Chancellor
