APC DOCUMENT 31: Mathematics: Addition of a professional internship; deletion of mathematics minor for teachers
I. Addition of a Professional Internship listing.
ADD
MATH 489 Professional Internship (1-3)
Semester-long internship involving mathematical / statistical work with participating public
agencies, nonprofit organizations, or commercial institutions. A written report and oral
presentation are required upon completion of the project. Prerequisite: A Minimum GPA of
2.5 overall and in the department, MATH 291, at least junior standing and permission of
the instructor. (Grading S/U.) May be repeated up to a total of three hours credit. See
department chair.
Impact Statement: None foreseen.
Rationale: This is a typical course offered by many departments at UNCA. Students will benefit from experiencing how mathematics can be used in a nonacademic setting. Allowing students to receive credit will help motivate them to do this. An internship experience may also help them obtain employment after graduation. Other departments with similar courses are listed below. The compiled list is not necessarily possibly incomplete.

DELETE (page 163)
Mathematics Minor for Teachers
Students who complete the grades 6-9 licensure requirements may obtain the mathematics minor for teachers to qualify for endorsement in mathematics by completing the following 21 hours: MATH 191, 192, 291, 280, 332, CSCI 201 or 202; EDUC 383. At least MATH 280 and 332 must be taken at UNCA.
Rationale: The present program is not in line with the needs of middle school teachers. Calculus II & III and C++ programming are not essential fields for these students.
