Effective Date: Fall 2000

Delete: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 146, delete the entire section under the heading Declaration of Major.

Add: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 146, add the following under the heading Declaration of Major.

Declaring a major in Management requires the student to complete a Declaration of Major form that must be signed by the department chair. Before declaring a major, students must satisfy the LANG 102 and Library Research requirements.

Impact: This change will reduce the number of provisional majors and will not significantly increase the overall number of majors.

Rationale: Currently, due to the specific course requirements to declare a major, students who need to declare a major for financial aid or scholarship reasons must declare a provisional major. The proposed change will permit major declaration which is not provisional--the only benefit to students and the Department.

Delete: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 147, delete the entire section under the heading General Requirements for Management.

Add: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 147, add the following under the heading General Requirements for Management.

I. A core of 47 hours is required, as specified below.

a. Required courses in the major-28 hours: MGMT 220, 221, 300, 313, 350, 380, 386, 398, 480, 491.

b. Required courses outside the major-19 hours: ACCT 215, 216; ECON 101*, 102, 306; STAT 185*.

II. a. Demonstration of degree competency is fulfilled by successful completion of a specified comprehensive project in MGMT 491.

b. Demonstration of oral competency is fulfilled by meeting published departmental standards regarding a designated presentation given in MGMT 491.

III. Other departmental requirements - Students must have a grade of C or better in MGMT 220, 491; ACCT 215 to graduate. The selection of a Management Concentration consisting of 15 semester hours of coordinated work. Any substitutions for specific courses must be approved in writing by the department chair.

* Students anticipating a major in Management may choose ECON 101 as one of their social science General Education requirements and, if qualified, choose STAT 185 as their mathematics General Education requirement.

Impact: This change will restructure the Management core courses to meet University, Department, and program objectives by adding: MGMT 221, 313; eliminating ACCT 201; and adding ACCT 215 and 216.

Rationale: Based on input from stakeholders and the Department's mission statement, Department and related program objectives were reexamined. Upon the refinement of existing objectives and formalization of new objectives, it was necessary to make some changes to the core curriculum, in order to properly address and fulfill these objectives.

Delete: In catalog 1999-2000 on pp. 147-148, delete the entire section under the heading Management Concentrations.

Add: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 147, add the following under the heading Management Concentrations.

Business Management and Administration: MGMT 316, 352, 413, 460; 489 or 495.

Health Care: MGMT 320, 321, 421, 425; 489 or 495.

Marketing: MGMT 352, 357 or 358, 453, 458; 489 or 495.

Impact: This change reduces the number of concentrations available to Management majors by eliminating the Financial, Human Resources, International, Operations, and Individualized concentrations.

Rationale: With the refinement and formalization of Department and Management program objectives, it became clear that in order to match resources to objectives, it was necessary to reduce the number of courses offered and streamline the available concentrations. A reduction in the number of concentrations offered was the result of this endeavor. The inclusion of the common requirement of MGMT 489 or 495 in all the concentrations implies that students must complete the MGMT 489 or 495 course project on a topic or a problem related to their concentration area.

#4
Replace: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 148, under the section entitled Minor Course Work, replace the requirement of ACCT 201 with ACCT 215.

Impact: This will make the minor requirements consistent with the new Principles of Accounting course offerings.

Rationale: ACCT 201 has been replaced with ACCT 215, since ACCT 215 now provides a comprehensive look at basic accounting principles. The previous ACCT 201 requirement covered basic accounting principles and explored managerial accounting. It was a prerequisite to ACCT 202, which assumed knowledge of basic accounting principles and covered financial accounting. ACCT 215 covers basic accounting principles and explores financial accounting. ACCT 215 is the prerequisite to ACCT 216 which assumes knowledge of basic accounting principles and covers managerial accounting.

Add: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 148, add the following under the heading Declaration of Major.

Declaring a major in Industrial and Engineering Management requires the student to complete a Declaration of Major form that must be signed by the department chair.

148, delete the following under the heading General Requirements for Industrial and Engineering Management.

This program requires a total of 124 semester hours. Major requirements are specified below:

I. Required courses in the major-27 hours as follows: MGMT 220, 350, 380, 381, 384, 394, 460, 487, 492.

II. Required courses outside the major-50 hours as follows: ACCT 201; CHEM 111, 132, 144; CSCI 201; ECON 102, 306; ENGR 206, 314; MATH 191, 192, 291; PHYS 221, 222; STAT 225.

Add: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 148, add the following under the heading General Requirements for Industrial and Engineering Management.

This program requires a total of 125 semester hours. Major requirements are specified below.

I. Required courses in the major-31 hours: MGMT 220, 221, 350, 380, 381, 384, 386, 394, 460, 487, 492.

II. Required courses outside the major-47 hours: ACCT 215; CHEM 111, 132, 144; ECON 102, 306; ENGR 206, 314; MATH 191, 192, 291; PHYS 221, 222; STAT 225.

Impact: This change adds the Management Information Technology Lab (MGMT 221) and replaces CSCI 201 with MGMT 386. As there are usually fewer than four graduates per year from the Industrial and Engineering Management Program, the elimination of the CSCI 201 requirement will have minimal impact on the Computer Science Department.

Rationale: MGMT 221 is a prerequisite for some of the required MGMT courses; therefore it was added to the list of required courses to avoid having a hidden prerequisite. MGMT 386 (Systems and Information Management) replaces CSCI 201 as a requirement since with the advent of so many application programs it is no longer a requirement for industrial engineer and production managers to be able to do structured programming. However, it is essential that these graduates be able to understand and link applications programming by using a systems approach. For this reason, MGMT 386 is a more appropriate course to meet both academic and professional needs.

Delete: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 149, delete the following under the heading General Requirements for Industrial and Engineering Management.

IV. Other departmental requirements-Successful completion of MGMT 492 with a C or better demonstrates degree competency.

Add: In catalog 1999-2000 on p. 149, add the following under the heading General Requirements for Industrial and Engineering Management.

IV. Other departmental requirements-Successful completion of MGMT 492 with a C or better demonstrates degree competency. Students must have a grade of C or better in MGMT 220, 492; ACCT 215 to graduate.

Impact: This change requires that an Industrial and Engineering Management student have a grade of C or better in MGMT 200, 492; ACCT 215 to graduate.

Rationale: To be a graduate of the Industrial and Engineering Management program, students should have demonstrated a basic level of accomplishment in the introductory courses in management (220) and accounting (215) as well as the capstone IEM course (492).
