Statement of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 19: Changes in Economics Concentration Requirements; Addition of ECON 380 and ECON 480
a. Eliminate CSCI 107 and MATH 163, 167, or 191 as cognate requirements.
Delete: In Catalog 1999-2000, on page 94, under Concentration in Economics, all of section II.
Add: In place of the deleted section, the following:
II. Required courses outside the major--4 hours: STAT 185.
Delete: In Catalog 1999-2000, on page 94, under Concentration in Monetary Economics and Finance, all of section II.
Add: In place of the deleted section, the following:
II. Required courses outside the major--7 hours: ACCT 201; STAT 185.
Delete: In Catalog 1999-2000, on page 94, under Concentration in Political Economy, all of section II.
Add: In place of the deleted section, the following:
II. Required courses outside the major--7 hours: PHIL 200 or 304; STAT
185.
Delete: In Catalog 1999-2000, on pages 94-95, under Economics with Teacher Licensure, all of section II.
Add: In place of the deleted section, the following:
II. Required courses outside the major--16 hours: HIST 101,102; POLS
220; one course from ANTH 215, SOC 221 or 240; STAT 185.
Impact: Enrollment in CSCI 107 and MATH 163, 167, or 191 will drop slightly. Given the current number of majors (40), the reduction should not be sufficient to affect staffing or offering patterns of CSCI or MATH. Please see the concurrences of the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science.
The changes in teacher licensure reflect changes requested by the Department of Education. Given the number of Licensure students Economics has had in the last ten years--zero--there is likely to be little impact. Please see the concurrence of the Department of Education.
Rationale: Changes in the preparedness of students from North Carolina, due to changes in state law and the spread of computer literacy, indicate that these courses are no longer necessary for our students to be successful in the major. The combination of STAT 185 and ECON 365, taken by all economics majors, provides the requisite mathematical and computer knowledge and skills.
The changes in teacher licensure reflect changes requested by the General Administration of the University of North Carolina in order to reduce the number of hours required for teacher licensure.
b. Change the department's approach to undergraduate research.
Add: In Catalog 1999-2000, on page 97, the following:
380 Approaches to Research in Economics (1)
An examination of alternative approaches to the conduct of research in economics.
The student will become familiar with the Undergraduate Research Program at
UNCA and develop a proposal for research to be conducted in ECON 480.
Prerequisite: junior or senior standing. (Grading is S/U.) Fall and Spring.
Add: In Catalog 1999-2000, on page 98, the following:
480 Research Seminar in Economics (3)
A seminar in which the student conducts supervised research in economics on a
subject of personal interest. The methods, concepts, and approaches employed will
typically draw upon the student's major courses. Prerequisite: ECON 380 and
senior standing. Fall and Spring.
Impact: No impact. Staffing and offering frequency of the 380/480 combination will be the same as the present offering of ECON 490 (a four-credit course). ECON 490 will be offered for the last time in Fall 2000.
Rationale: By substituting the two-semester 380/480 sequence for the one-semester 490 course, economics majors will have more time to develop and refine their research projects. This should enable them to produce better quality undergraduate research and will enable them to participate more actively in the Undergraduate Research Program.
c. Changes induced by (b).

d. Provide suggested course information.
Add: In Catalog 1999-2000, on page 94-95, under Concentration in Economics, Concentration in Monetary Economics and Finance, Concentration in Political Economy, and Economics with Teacher Licensure, the following:
IV. Suggested courses outside the major--Students with limited computer experience should take CSCI 107. Students interested in graduate school in economics should take MATH 191 and 192.
Impact: None.
Rationale: Suggested courses outside the major supplements student advising by providing additional information about courses that may enhance a student's educational experiences and career prospects without mandating that every student take them.
