Statement of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document #30 PSYC 463 (FIELDWORK)
Effective Date: Fall 1999
Delete: on p. 198 the current course listing for PSYC 461-6 (Fieldwork)
Replace: with the following
463 Fieldwork (3)
Advanced psychology students work in local human service agencies to gain applied clinical experience. Weekly seminar meetings focus on the acquisition of basic helping skills and discussion of ethical and professional issues. Prerequisites: PSYC 101, 102, 201, 202, 308 and permission of instructor. (Grading is S/U.) Fall and Spring.
Rationale:
The change in course description is largely editorial and designed to bring the Catalog entry into better alignment with current course practices. As student interest in the course has grown the Department has moved from scheduling individual appointments to using the traditional course meeting modality. Students also are being placed in a variety of agencies, making the phrase "social or mental health agencies" inappropriate.
Over the past two decades more than 90 percent of fieldwork students have enrolled in the 3 semester hour mode of this course. Individually scheduled placements at less than 3 SHs have been extremely rare and at this point do not fit well with our shift to traditional course meetings. The Department does not see a need to continue making it available in the variable credit hour mode.
Impact Statement:
There is no staffing or financial impact of this change. There are no changes to prerequisites and no changes planned to the course offering pattern. The elimination of the variable credit hour mode is not expected to impact students negatively as it rarely has been used over the past two decades.
