THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1993S Date of Senate Approval 3/11/93 Signature of Senate Chair ________________________________ Date _________________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval ________________________________________ Date ____________________ Denied _________________________________________ Date ____________________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #16 "Catalog Changes in Sociology" Effective Date: Fall 1993 Delete: The prerequisite(s) for all electives and the courses that students must take to complete work in one of the department's programs (i.e., criminal justice, general sociology, gerontology, and social welfare) are eliminated. The only exception is Sociology 302 which will include a prerequisite of Sociology 100 or permission of the instructor. Delete the prerequisites for Sociology 200, Introduction to Criminology, 220 Juvenile Delinquency, 221 Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, 223 Sociology of Aging, 230 Marriage and the Family, 235 Retirement Planning and Living, 236 Social Welfare Systems, 251 Gender and Society, 301 Sociology of Education, 312 Society, Culture and Poverty, 315 Urban Problems and Policy, 322 Black Culture and Society, 325 Revolutions and Social Movements, 327 Anthropological Perspectives on Modern Europe, 331 Political Sociology, 333 Aging: Problems and Prospects, 340 Social Control and Deviant Behavior, 343 Role Changes in Later Life, 344 Counseling of Older Adults and Their Families, 345 The Industrial State and the Consumer Society, 350 Sociology of the Third World: Issues of Hunger and Development, 351 Social Work Practice and Methods, 352 Sociological Perspectives on Women, 353 Culture and Personality, 354 Population Dynamics: Demography and Epidemiology, 362 Sociology of Health and Illness, 363 Health and Aging, 365 Violence in America, 461 The Welfare State, 480 Sociology of Law, 481-6 Topical Research, 491-6 Senior Readings Course, 171-6, 271-6, 371-6, 471-6 Special Topics in Sociology The prerequisites listed for Sociology 225 Classical Sociological Theory, 355 Research Methods I, 356 Research Methods II, 420 Social Stratification, 450 Modern Sociological Theory and 451 Field Research are eliminated. Rationale: The changes proposed will eliminate some unnecessary barriers and enable a greater number of students from the larger university to take these courses. A liberal arts education should by definition be broadly based and these changes will give the department a greater opportunity to make a substantial contribution to this kind of education. Delete: The second paragraph of the description of the major which reads, "The student many elect one of four programs: General, Criminal Justice, Social Welfare, and Gerontology." The third paragraph of the description of the major which reads, "Teacher certification in social studies is available by majoring in Sociology and choosing any of the four programs." The description of the four programs (i.e., General, Criminal Justice, Social Welfare, and Gerontology listed on p 171-172). The course title and description for Sociology 322 Black Culture and Society. The course description for Sociology 365 Violence in America. Rationale: To maintain these four programs places too much of a strain on the faculty in that it requires the teaching of the courses required for each on a regular basis. They are therefore limited in the range of courses they can teach and the opportunity to design new courses more in keeping with a liberal arts tradition. Add: 1. Prerequisites for the courses listed below are to be changed to the following: Sociology 225 Classical Sociological Theory Prerequisites: Sociology 100 Introduction to Sociology, 210 Modern Social Problems or permission of the instructor. Sociology 355 Research Methods I Prerequisites: Sociology 100 Introduction to Sociology and either Sociology 210 Modern Social Problems or 215 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology. Sociology 451 Field Research Prerequisites: Sociology 100 Introduction to Sociology or 215 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology and Sociology 355 Research Methods I. 2. Following the first paragraph describing the major in the 1992-1993 Catalog, add the following paragraphs in the order described: The major requires the student to complete 36 hours in Sociology including the following 24 hours: Sociology 100, 210, 225, 355, 356, 420, 450 and 451, plus 12 elective hours. For those students wishing to pursue a career in the fields of Criminal Justice, Social Welfare or Gerontology the following courses are recommended: Criminal Justice (Sociology 200, 220, 340, 365, 480 and selected Special Topics) Social Welfare (Sociology 230, 236, 312, 315 322, 351 and 461) Gerontology (Sociology 223, 333, 343 344, 362, and 363) 3. Following the new third paragraph as described above, add the following paragraph: A grade of C or better in Sociology 451 satisfies the senior demonstration of competency requirement. 4. Following the new fourth paragraph as described directly above, add the following paragraph: Students interested in teacher certification in social studies should consult the department chair and the appropriate advisor in the Education Department. 5. Change the course title for Sociology 322 from Black Culture and Society to African American Culture and Society. 5a. Change the course description for Sociology 322 to the following: A study of African American subculture with special emphasis on communities, institutional structures and the evolving views of African American society. 6. Change the course description for Sociology 365 to the following: The historical and political dynamics characterizing American violence from the American Revolution to contemporary cultural patterns with attention given to victimization and interpersonal violence, collective and political violence, organizational structures and institutional violence, and causes, correlates and policy implications. Rationale for 5 and 5a: 5. Changes in terminology to parallel course titles on other campuses. 5a. Changes in course description for added specificity of content. Rationale for 6: Reflects the topics that will actually be covered in the course. E. Impact Statement 1. The proposed changes including those in prerequisites and the elimination of the four Programs will give the faculty a greater flexibility in the range of courses that they will be able to teach and a greater freedom to create new courses more in keeping with the university's liberal arts traditions. They will also eliminate some unnecessary barriers that students have experienced in the past in regard to their choice of courses. Therefore, what is proposed is a major with a core of 24 hours of required courses which maintains the integrity of the major, while allowing a greater range of choices for both faculty and students. 2. These changes will have no effect on the major and University requirements. With regard to the minor, there is a change in the prerequisites for Sociology 225. 3. There is no need for additional staff to carry out what is proposed.
