Statement of Faculty Senate Action:   

FACULTY WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE DOCUMENT #91S3

SUBJECT:  Faculty Handbook

     In order to correct an anomaly in the Faculty Handbook
description of election eligibility to the Tenure and Hearings
Committees, the Senate resolves to amend the descriptions of the
Tenure and Hearings Committees by inserting the words "and
Grievance Committee" into the appropriate places in the
descriptions of the committees in the Faculty Handbook, Section
VIII, Sub-paragraphs A and B, pp. A-15-21 and A-15-22.


Rationale:

     When the Senate altered the terms of the Grievance Committee
from one year to two years, it created a situation where
continuing members of that committee could be elected to either
Tenure or Hearings, though the description of the Grievance
Committee states that members of those committees could not serve
on Grievance.

     Thus, a current member of Grievance if elected to either of
the other committees would have to resign from Grievance.  It was
not the intent of the Senate to create the possibility of rapid
committee change when it extended Grievance terms to two years. 
This proposal returns the Handbook to its original intent.

     The proposal includes all Grievance members, not just
continuing members, so that the section will harmonize with like
descriptions in the Tenure and Hearings sections.
