THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2991S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/91 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document # 26 Prerequisite Change for Econ 360 Effective Date: Fall 1991 Change on p. 96, Current Catalog: Prerequisite for Economics 360, Elements of Mathematical Economics From: Economics 200 and 201 To: Economics 200, 201 and Math 191 Rationale: Economics 360 serves a select group of students who typically plan to attend graduate school in Economics (in which case Math 191 is a minimal prerequisite at any quality program), or plan to enroll in an MBA program which typically requires a similar background. The instructor, Dr. Larson, has strong training in Mathematical Economics and has requested this change. Students entering the course with Math 191 experience will allow them and the instructor to devote more time to application of mathematics to economic models. Therefore the content of Economics 360 will be less duplicative of Math 191 where calculus should be taught. Environmental Impact: There will be minimal impact on mathematics (see Dr. Kay's memo). In Economics the enrollment may drop by 1-3 students initially, however, as the overall quality of UNCA students continues to rise, enrollments are unlikely to be influenced by this change. No impact on instructional or other resources.
