Committees included in this policy are the University Research Council, University Teaching Council, and other standing committees for which Senate elects members. Current policy A formal date is not specified in the constitution. The traditional practice has been to elect members at the first meeting of the Senate in the Fall. Rationale The organization of faculty committees each year has frequently been delayed until all appointments and elections have been completed. Membership on standing committees is a combination of election by the Faculty, election by the Faculty Senate, and appointments by Page 2 the Vice Chancellor and the Chancellor. The Vice Chancellor and Chancellor make most of their decisions before Senate elections of members to committees; when Senate elects faculty to committees, Senate members generally do not know which faculty have been appointed to committees. The result of this practice is that the VCAA is less able to assure balance on the committees, faculty start the academic year without knowing what their full committee load is, and many faculty end up with too many committees and others not enough. To facilitate this policy, a committee preference form could be completed by each faculty member in the spring to assist in determining faculty preferences for election or appointment to standing committees.
