Please delete the catalog listings for Educ 101 and Educ 102 ____ _______ on p. 106 of the 1987-88 UNCA Catalog. Add in their place: Educ 102 Reading and Critical Thinking in the Liberal Arts Students will develop the background knowledge necessary to read and interpret the works of great writers. Issues include the value of a liberal education, the individual in society, and social justice. Critical thinking is learned through a wide survey of the humanities incorporating readings from world history, literature, philosophy, music, and art. Identifying key vocabulary, major ideas and supporting details, analyzing text structure, evaluating arguments, distinguishing between fact and opinion, and solving problems form the thrust of this course. Students are also required to write summaries and participate in scholarly discussions. This course counts in determining the students' records and contributes to GPA, but does not count as part of the 120 hours required for graduation. Educ 103 Academic Study of the Liberal Arts This course is designed to promote academic study of the liberal arts. It incorporates materials from the various disciplines requiring students to prepare for classroom discussions, written and oral reports, and tests. Students are taught study and self regulatory skills: how to set goals, provide self-incentives, and monitor behavior. In addition they learn note taking and time management skills. This course counts in determining the students' records and contributes to GPA, but does not count as part of the 120 hours required for graduation. Students who have received credit for Educ 101 may not receive credit for Educ 103. On p. 40 under "College Skills Program," at the end of the paragraph that concludes with "...before advancing to other courses within the same discipline," add: "The Educ 102 and 103 courses specifically address the needs of students who require further preparation for liberal arts study. Students who are placed into these courses must pass them prior to taking Hum 124. 3. On p. 40 under "College Skills Courses," delete the listing of Educ 101 and Educ 102. Add: Educ 102 Reading and Critical Thinking in the Liberal Arts 3 semester hours.
