SENATE DOCUMENT #15 ACADEMIC POLICIES COMMITTEE DOCUMENT #10 1984-85 The Academic Policies Committee recommends the following changes in the Department of Literature: 1. Rename COMM 265 (Science and Technical Writing) LANG 261 (Science and Technical Writing). Rationale: Because the Communications program specializes in Communications to a mass audience, the director of that program does not feel that a course in Science and Technical Writing is appropriate to the program, nor one which their staff is prepared to teach. For that reason, we are requesting that the course (which has not yet been taught) be transferred from Communications to Language. The course is required for the new degree in Industrial and Engineering Management. 2. Cancel Literature 110 (Enrichment in Literature and Writing). Rationale: This course has never been offered and we have no plans to offer it. Should an occasion arise, we would prefer to offer it as a special topics. 3. Add a new Literature course: 200 Literature and Human Values (3) An introduction to western masterworks of literature. Classic novels, plays and poetry, studied for their expression of human values and cultural insights. Recommended as a university elective. Rationale: This course is needed to fulfill WCU requirements. It also would make an attractive elective for UNCA students. It will be taught primarily in the evenings and Saturdays. 4. Change 3 course titles: LIT 221 Western Literature I to The Beginnings of Western Literature LIT 222 Western Literature II to Western Literature: Renaissance to Enlightenment LIT 223 Western Literature III to Western Literature: Romantic to Modern Rationale: The current titles lack clarity. Without reading the catalog, students cannot decipher what literary periods they cover. They also present difficulty for students transferring to another college since they lack specificity. Course descriptions and content remain unchanged.
