1981-1982 Senate Document #27 APC Document #24 Department of Management New Courses/Change in Prerequisites/ Alternative Demonstration in Competency I. Currently, Management 430 requires only Management 200 as a prerequisite. This has created a situation in which the average class in 430 contains students with a less than rudimentary knowledge of organizational behavior as well as students with a fairly sophisticated background in the area. The addition of 313 (Organizational Behavior) as a prerequisite would allow the 430 course to be taught at a more rigorous pace and in more depth, given the homogenous course background of the students. Catalog p. 112 - Management 430 Development of Professional Personnel Delete: Prerequisite: Mgmt. 200 Add: Prerequisite: Mgmt. 200 and 313 II. Catalog now reads: "Other departmental rquirements ... which satisfies the Demonstration of Competency requirement for the degree." Proposed: Add: "Students exempted from Management 490 are required to pass a final Competency Examination on topics agreeable to the student and the faculty of the Department." Rationale: Presently the student excused from Management 490 can take six hours approved by the Chairman of the department in lieu of Mgmt. 490. This is not stated in the present catalog. We believe a statement should be in the catalog and that the statement be similar to those departments that do not have a 490 course. III. On catalog page #111 The following course to be added: Management 351 Marketing Research - This course will introduce you to the exciting world of determining consumer preferences. The course will examine the various techniques involved in the collection, tabulation and analysis of market information. The student will become involved in a market research project sponsored by a local business. Prerequisite: Mgmt. 350. Page 2 On catalog page #112 The following course to be added: Management 450 - International Marketing - A survey of the cultural, legal, political and economic factors which affect marketing in a world market. Emphasis is placed upon the differences in life styles, beliefs, attitudes, languages, behaviors, as these influence the decisions made by a firm doing business in a foreign area. Prerequisites: Mgmt. 351, Comm. 341. The purpose of these additions is to strengthen the Management Department's offerings in the critical area of marketing. Marketing Research and Advertising have been offered once each on a special topics basis. Advertising is now offered as a communication course in the Language Department. Student acceptance of and interest in these courses has been gratifying. For example, 27 signed up for Advertising taught at 3 PM the second semester of 1981. In addition the marketing research course involves a number of local business executives who act as sponsors of student projects. Such sponsors include: WLOS-FM, McDonald's, WISE, other firms have expressed an interest in becoming a part of the program. The addition of International Marketing will continue a long standing interest by UNCA in the world beyond our national borders. In addition, as an increasing number of non-American businesses locate branches in this area knowledge of international marketing will make our graduates more useful to potential employers.
