Senate Document #2 (Third Revision 12/9/81) EC Document #2 (Third Revision 12/9/81) Proposed Procedure for Approval of New Degree Programs, and Tracks Within Programs New degree programs and program tracks are to receive review and recommendation from the Faculty Senate prior to submission to the Board of Trustees and the UNC General Administration. As described below this process requires several considerations. First: At the time of submitting a request to plan a degree program such request should receive review and recommendation by both IDC and the Faculty Senate. This review is to consider the concept, purpose, feasibility, and appropriateness of the request. The Institutional Development Committee reviews track proposal and forwards its document to the Academic Policies Committee. Second: If the institution is granted approval to plan a degree program or a new track is proposed the curriculum details are to receive review and recommendation by APC and the Faculty Senate prior to submission to the UNC General Administration. This review is to consider program structure, catalog description, number of required hours in the major, correlate requirements, resource requirements and impact on other departments. Resource requirements include faculty positions, course offerings, library, computer, laboratory, budget and those matters pertaining directly to the academic program. This review of resource requirements is to guarantee consideration has been given to these matters, and any recommendation about resources will be stated separately from the recommendation on the academic merits of the proposed programs or tracks. When these two recommendations differ an overall judgement will be made. Third: Senate recommendations are forwarded to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for his review. He will in turn summarize his own recommendations and comments in a memorandum to the Chairman of the Faculty Senate. In addition, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs will forward to the Chancellor a copy of this summary along with the Senate recommendations and the minutes of the Senate meeting in which these recommendations were discussed. Should the proposed program or track be returned by the UNC General Administration for substantive revision, these revisions are to be reviewed by APC and the Faculty Senate prior to resubmission of the proposal. The Chairman of APC is to be liaison between the APC, the proposal drafting committee, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and the Chancellor.
