Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC
Document 66: Change how World and Western
Civilization courses are applied to HIST 151 and 152
Effective Date:
Fall 2007
1. Delete: On pg
145, in the course description for HIST 151:
Majors who transfer 3 or 6 hours in Western or World Civilization
from another institution must not repeat 151 or 152 or both, but instead take 3
or 6 hours of History at the 300 level or above.
Add: On pg 145, in place of deleted
entry:
Students who transfer a course equivalent to World Civilization I
from another institution may use the course for HIST 151 or may use it to
fulfill the HUM 124 requirement. Students choosing to use the course for HUM
124 will not receive credit for HIST 151, nor can they take HIST 151 for
credit. History majors who choose to use the course for HUM 124 must complete 3
hours of History at the 300 level or above in lieu of HIST 151.
2. Delete: On pg
145, in the course description for HIST 152:
Majors who transfer 3 or 6 hours in Western Civilization or World
Civilization from another institution must not repeat 151 or 152 or both, but
instead take 3 or 6 hours of History at the 300 level or above.
Add: On pg 145, in place of deleted
entry:
Students who transfer a course equivalent to World Civilization II
from another institution may use the course for HIST 152 or may use it to
fulfill the HUM 214 requirement. Students choosing to use the course for HUM
214 will not receive credit for HIST 152, nor can they take HIST 152 for
credit. History majors who choose to use the course for HUM 214 must complete 3
hours of History at the 300 level or above in lieu of HIST 152.
Impact:
Students who transfer in Western
Civilization courses will still automatically receive credit for Humanities 124
and/or 214. Students transferring World Civilization courses will choose
between having the courses fulfill the corresponding Humanities or History
courses. Initially the World Civilization courses will appear on the transfer
evaluations as Humanities credit, but this will be changed if a student
requests the courses be used for History. Students have always had the option
of taking HUM 124 and 214 even if they transfer World and/or Western
Civilization. This policy will not change.
History majors who transfer Western Civilization
courses will now be required to complete HIST 151 and 152.
Rationale:
World and Western Civilization courses
are considered equivalent from a transfer standpoint. Currently, students who
transfer either World or Western Civilization I and/or II cannot receive credit
for taking HIST 151 and/or 152. Clarifying the distinction in the course
descriptions allows those students who transfer Western Civilization to receive
additional credit for taking World Civilization. The department believes that
Western Civilization courses and World Civilization courses are very different.
We want History majors to have the background in World Civilization that is not
satisfied by taking a Western Civilization class.
