Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 60:      Delete EDUC 313 from required courses for 6-9 Social Studies licensure;

Clarify requirement of the Humanities sequence for Social Studies licensure

Effective Date: Fall 2007

1.  Delete:         On pg 112, under Middle School Licensure, in item I:

Social Studies students must take EDUC 130, 313, and 380.

Add:            On pg 112, in place of deleted entry:

Social Studies students must take EDUC 130 and 380.

Impact:

Social Studies candidates will have 3 fewer hours required for them to get licensed in middle grades education.

Rationale:

EDUC 313 is Adolescent Literature. Adolescent Literature is not a state standard for social studies licensure candidates. It IS a standard for language arts licensure.

2.    Add:          On pg 112, under Middle School Licensure, in item II, after "Social Studies-9

hours....POLS 220.

State standards for Language Arts and Social Studies licensure are met by

completion of the ILS Core Cluster in Humanities (HUM 124, 214 and 324). Students

transferring to UNC Asheville must either take these courses, or have completed

courses at other institutions that satisfy the required standards.

Impact:

This clarifies the Humanities courses (or courses fulfilling the required competencies) are required for middle grade licensure candidates.

Rationale:

Humanities courses (or courses fulfilling the required competencies) are part of the licensure program requirements. Because they are part of the core curriculum, they were not placed in this section. By including these courses, transfer students see that an additional 12 hours of content courses may be required for 6-9 language arts and social studies licensure.
