Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document
55: Changing Requirements for Minor Programs
Effective Date: Fall 2007
1. Delete: On pg
41, the paragraph under the heading Optional
Minor Fields of Concentration
Add: On pg 41, in place of the deleted entry:
In
addition to the major field of study, a student may choose to complete one or
more minor fields of concentration. A minor that is awarded by an academic
department shall require at least 18 semester hours from the minor discipline
as indicated by the course prefix. Departmental minors may also require cognate
courses. Minors awarded by programs not
associated with an academic department shall also require at least 18 semester
hours, but need not require a minimum number of hours from a single department.
One-half of the hours required for a minor must be completed at UNC Asheville.
In addition, minors shall require that a minimum of 6 semester hours at the
300-400 level be taken at UNC Asheville. Minor fields of concentration will be
recorded along with majors on the student’s permanent transcript. Minors are available in the fields listed
below:
Impact:
None
because all existing minors meet these standards.
Rationale:
The
change brings the statement regarding minors into line with the standard
practice for describing major programs. The deleted statement specifies 24
hours as the maximum number of hours a minor may require. Some minor programs
would like to require courses that contain prerequisites that will put the
total number of required hours beyond the 24-hour maximum. By removing the hour
maximum, and specifying that minors awarded by a department must have a minimum
number of hours from the department, the minor program will be strengthened.
