Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document  52:                         Delete the Sound Recording Emphasis Area

Effective Date: Fall 2007

1.     Delete: On page 197, under I.C. Emphasis Area:

                      3. Sound Recording: MUSC 384, 385, 386, 387

Impact:

There are very few MMAS students who select this emphasis area in the major. Students who are currently enrolled in the emphasis area will complete their studies. There will be little or no impact.

Rationale:

The Sound Recording emphasis area has not proved to be successful for the MMAS program. MMAS students enrolled in this emphasis area often incorrectly presuppose that they are not required to place the same rigor in their visual studies. Multimedia Arts and Sciences has appropriately evolved to place importance on visual learning in animation, interactive and video. Sound is a significant component of the student’s work, but does not qualify for an emphasis area in and of itself for the MMAS major.

    2.     Delete:              On page 205, course description for MUSC 384.

Add:                 On page 205, in place of deleted entry:

Theoretical foundations of modern recording including the study of microphones, loudspeakers, signal processors, magnetic tape, equalizers and filters. Enrollment limited to formally declared Music Technology majors. Prerequisites: MUSC 231; PHYS 102; corequisite: MUSC 385. Spring.

Delete:              On page 206, the course description for MUSC 385.

Add:                 On page 206, in place of deleted entry:

Application of modern recording techniques with hands-on experience in a multitrack recording studio, covering microphone technique, tape machine operation, session procedures, basic production techniques. Enrollment limited to formally declared Music Technology majors. Prerequisites: MUSC 231; PHYS 102; corequisite: MUSC 384. Spring.

            Impact:

            None.

   Rationale:

This is an editorial change to reflect removing sound recording as a possible emphasis area in MMAS.
