Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 47: Increase
the number of credit hours for EDUC 316;
EDUC 317 from the
requirements for Foreign Language licensure
Effective Date: Fall 2007
1. Delete: On page 114,
316 Practicum in Teaching Foreign Languages,
K-12 (1)
Add:
On
page 114, in place of deleted entry:
316 Practicum in Teaching Foreign
Languages, K-12 (3)
Impact:
There will be little impact on the resources and
staffing of the Education department due to this change. EDUC 316 is currently taught in alternate
semesters, as needed, and will continue to be taught on this schedule, either
by a member of the Department of Education or by a member of the Department of
Foreign Languages. Since the course is taught as
needed, scheduling takes into consideration the availability of faculty.
Rationale:
This change is being made due to the need for more
course time with specific emphasis on state foreign language program standards.
There are 15 state foreign language licensure standards. Candidates have only two courses specific to
foreign language education in which to demonstrate
required competencies before the student teaching
semester. Increasing EDUC 316 to 3 hours
will allow a deeper concentration on those competencies, particularly literacy
theory, and better preparation for student teaching.

Licensure (K-12)”,
I. Required courses in Education-21 hours,
including: EDUC 310, 311, 316, 317,
385, 396, 455, 496.
Add:
On
page 113, in place of deleted entry,
I. Required courses in Education-20 hours,
including: EDUC 310, 311, 316, 385,
396, 455, 496.
Impact:
Dropping EDUC 317 from the requirements for foreign
language licensure and increasing EDUC 316 to 3 hours will result in an overall
reduction of one hour.
Rationale:
EDUC 317, Teaching Language and Literature, K-9 has
as its focus teaching language arts to children in English in regular K-9
classes. Foreign language licensure candidates have frequently expressed
frustration that EDUC 317 does not focus on the differing needs of children
learning a second language.
