Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 45:       Add DRAM 380, Methods and Management in Teaching Theatre,
Grades 6-12 (4);  Change Required Courses for Theatre Arts Licensure

Effective Date:  Fall 2007

1.                     Add:     On pg 102, new course, DRAM 380

380       Methods and Management in Teaching Theatre, Grades 6-12 (4)

Instructional planning, teaching methods, curricular development, classroom management, and assessment as applied to teaching theatre in co-curricular and extra curricular theatre/drama programs in middle and high school settings.  Field experience is required.  To be taken as part of the Professional Year prior to the Student Teaching Semester (EDUC 455 and 496).  Prerequisites:  EDUC 314; formal admission to the education department.  Co-requisite: EDUC 396.

Impact: This course will replace EDUC 380 that is a current requirement for Theatre Arts with Teacher Licensure students.  This change will not require additional faculty or resources, but will require balance in scheduling.

Rationale: Because content and pedagogy for K-6 versus 6-12 students are significantly different, it is essential that we provide our Theatre Arts with Teacher Licensure students with at least one course focused on each age range. Currently, DRAM 317 focuses on K-6 and the proposed DRAM 380 will focus on 6-12; these two courses allow the teacher candidates to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for K-12 licensure.

Also, because theatre arts licensure encompasses both co-curricular and extra curricular programs it is essential that the teaching candidates have experiences that will specifically prepare them to succeed as teachers in this specialized field.  A content specific methods course is essential in meeting state standards.

2.         Delete:  On pg 99, under Concentration in Theatre Arts with Teacher Licensure:

            49 hours as follows: DRAM 104, 124, 212, 220, 317, 362, 462; 3 hours of DRAM at the

      300-400 level; EDUC 310, 311, 314, 380, 396, 455, 496; PSYC 101, 318.

Add:     On pg 99, in place of deleted entry:

            49 hours as follows: DRAM 104, 124, 212, 220, 317, 362, 380, 462; 3 hours of DRAM at

            the 300-400 level; EDUC 310, 311, 314, 396, 455, 496; PSYC 101 or 102, and 318.

Impact: Theatre Arts Licensure students will take DRAM 380 instead of EDUC 380.

Rationale: Editorial change to reflect the addition of DRAM 380.

3.         Delete:  On pg 113, under Theatre Arts Licensure (K-12), in item I:

I.   Required courses in Education—24-25 hours, including: EDUC 310, 311, either 313 or

     both 317 and 318, 314, 380, 396, 455, 496.

Add:     On pg 113, in place of deleted entry:

I.    Required courses in Education—17 hours, including: EDUC 310, 311, 314, 396, 455,

      496.

Impact: Theatre Arts Licensure students will take DRAM 380 instead of EDUC 380.

Rationale: Editorial changes to reflect the addition of DRAM 380.  Previous program changes from the 2006-2007 catalog require the additional editorial change of removing “…either 313 or both 317 and 318,”.  This change was approved last academic year and removed from the Drama section of the catalog, but was not updated in this section of the catalog.
