APC Document
44: Adding new
European History Courses: HIST 357 and 358
Adding
HIST 357 and 358 to Women's Studies Options
1. Add: On
pg 147, under European History Courses, new course, HIST 357:
357 Women and Imperialism (3)
In
this survey of European hegemony (1789-1944), students will study imperialism
from the perspectives of European and non-European women who were
active participants in either extending or resisting European control.
This seminar will revolve around readings of primary sources including letters,
memoirs, pamphlets, fiction, and artistic production. See department chair.
Impact:
Adding
this course will have no resource implications. It diversifies the offerings in
European history.
Rationale:
This
course has been taught once as a special topics course. It replaces HIST 355 in
the curriculum. The new course provides a more global focus on issues related
to European women (1789-1944), is more focused than the survey it replaces, and
better reflects the current state of historical research in this field.
2. Add: On
pg 147, under European History Courses, new course, HIST 358:
358 European Feminisms (3)
Beginning
in the Renaissance, learned women called for expanded opportunities for women
and articulated a critique of patriarchal institutions. Their legacy
inspired later generations of women who, thanks to modernization, had greater
opportunities for mass-mobilization. This course will examine these women
and movements across the European continent. See department chair.
Impact:
Adding
this course will have no resource implications. It diversifies the offerings in
European history.
Rationale:
This
course replaces HIST 354 in the curriculum. The new course provides a more focused
approach than the previous general surveys and better reflects the current
state of historical research in this field.
3. Delete: On pg 240, in the list of courses under Humanities:
HIST 354 European Women: Antiquity to
1700 (3)
HIST 355 European Women: 1700 to the Present (3)
Add: On pg 240, in the list of courses
under Humanities:
HIST 357
Women and Imperialism (3)
HIST 358 European
Feminisms (3)
Impact:
None
Rationale:
HIST
354 and 355 are being deleted from the curriculum. The new courses, HIST 357
and 358 are relevant to the Women's Studies major and minor.
