Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
Effective
Date: Fall 2007
1. Delete:
On pg 192, the course entries for MATH 212 and MATH 216
212 Structure of
Mathematics I: Laboratory and Field Experience (1)
216 Structure of Mathematics II: Laboratory and Field Experience (1)
Impact:
There
will be no impact on the Math Department because Education Department faculty
teach these courses. In place of these courses, elementary education students
will now take EDUC 340.
Rationale:
This
change is paired with a request by the Education Department to reinstate EDUC
340. EDUC 340 meets all the competencies addressed in MATH 212 and 216. It is
important to note that while current course descriptions for MATH 212 and 216
indicate that the courses parallel the topics covered in MATH 211 and 215 (with
which 212 and 216 are corequisites), the reality is that the courses are not as
well integrated as the descriptions make them sound. The Mathematics and
Education Departments have determined that students will be better served by
covering this material in EDUC 340 after completing both MATH 211 and 215.
2. Delete:
On pg 192, in the course description
for MATH 211:
Corequisite: MATH 212.
3. Delete:
On pg 192, in the course description
for MATH 215
Corequisite: MATH 216.
Impact:
Removing the corequisites will have no impact on
resources.
Rationale:
These
are editorial changes necessitated by the deletion of MATH 212 and 216 from the
curriculum.
