Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document  32:                              Add a new course, ARTH 381:  Art in Latin America

Effective Date: Fall 2007

1.         Add:     On pg. 67, under Non-Western Art History:

381       Art in Latin America (3)

This course examines the diversity within the art and architecture             produced in Latin America from the ancient indigenous cultures through           colonialism to the present. Fall.

Impact:

Adding this course, ARTH 381, Art in Latin America, to the existing curriculum of Art History within the Art Department will strengthen the non-western course offerings and allow students to focus in this area.

Rationale:

The course will draw students from other areas of the UNCA campus and may be appropriate as part of a Topical Cluster.  This course, an overview of Latin American art from the ancient period to the present, would encourage discussions and readings on diversity, national identity, indigenism, race, slavery, miscegenation, syncretism, gender, and the African Diaspora.
