Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document  16:                              Change titles and descriptions of HIST 303 and 308

                                                            Change title for HIST 348

Effective Date:  Fall 2007

1.  Delete:   On pg 146, the entry for HIST 303

Add:      On pg 146, in place of deleted entry:

                  303       Colonial North America  (3)

Examines early North America from before European/American Indian contact to 1863.  The course pays particular attention to the interaction of indigenous, European, and African peoples and cultures, to the competition for empire among English/British, Spanish, and French nations and the rise of the British to a position of dominance in North America, and the internal development of American colonial society.  See department chair.

Impact:

No impact other than to give students a clearer picture of what the course is covering.

Rationale:

The new course title and description better describes the course as it is now currently taught.  The old course title and description were ones written by a faculty member who had retired

2.  Delete:   On pg 146, the title and course description for HIST 308

Add:      On pg 146, in place of deleted entry:

                  308       The United States Since 1945  (3)

An intensive study of America’s recent history, the course covers the period from the end of World War II through the Cold War to contemporary society. See department chair.

Impact:

No impact other than to give students a clearer picture of what the course is covering.

Rationale:

The new course description reflects another staffing change and the way that the person now teaching the course wishes to teach it

3.  Delete:      On pg 147, the title for HIST 348:

   Tudor-Stuart England

Add:        On pg 147, in place of deleted entry:

   Early Britain

Impact:

No real impact other than to give students a clearer picture of what the course is covering.

Rationale:

The new title of this course better reflects the inclusion of social and cultural history in the course.  The old title reflected a primary emphasis on political history.
