Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC
Document 9: Changes to Physics major, minor and prerequisite requirements
to reflect
the addition
of PHYS 326, 414 and 418
Effective Date: Fall 2007
1. Delete: On pg 211, under Concentration in Preparation for
I. Required
courses in the major – 32 hours: PHYS 221, 222, 323, 324, 325, 331, 332, 400,
401, 402, 411. PHYS 499 is highly recommended.
Add: On pg 211, in place of deleted entry:
I. Required

402, 414, 418. PHYS 499 is highly recommended.
2. Delete: On pg 211, under Concentration in Applied Physics,
item I:
I. Required
courses in the major – 33 hours: PHYS 221, 222, 310, 323, 324, 325, 331, 332,
400, 401, 402.
Add: On pg 211, in place of deleted entry:
I. Required

401, 402, 414.
Impact: These changes will not require any new
staffing or resources for the Physics Department.
Rationale: We are in effect dropping PHYS 400 Modern
Physics II (3 hours) and adding PHYS 414 Quantum Mechanics I (3 hours) to these
two concentrations, while also dropping PHYS 324 (3 hours) and replacing it by
PHYS 326 (3 hours). In the Concentration in Preparation for
3. Delete: On page 212, the description for Minor
in Physics:
21 hours: PHYS 221, 222, 324, 331; 9 additional hours
in Physics including one course from PHYS 323, 325 or 400. PHYS 105, 131, and
231 may not be included in these 9 hours. Notice that these minor courses have
prerequisites of MATH 191, 192, 291; and CHEM 132 or a satisfactory score on
the Chemistry Placement Examination.
Add: On page 212, the following new description for Minor in Physics:
21 hours: PHYS 221, 222, 326, 331; 9 additional hours
in Physics including one course from PHYS 323, 325 or 414. PHYS 105, 131, and
231 may not be included in these 9 hours. Notice that these minor courses have
prerequisites of MATH 191, 192, 291; and CHEM 132 or a satisfactory score on
the Chemistry Placement Examination.
Impact: This change will require no new staffing
or resources for the Physics Department.
Rationale: For the minor, the course requirement of PHYS 324
Modern Physics I has been changed to PHYS 326 Modern Physics. The course
requirement of PHYS 400 Modern Physics II has been changed to PHYS 414 Quantum
Mechanics I.
4. Delete: On pg 213, in the course description for PHYS 331, 332:
Corequisite:
PHYS 324. PHYS 331: Spring. PHYS 332: Fall.
Add: On pg 213, in place of deleted entry:
PHYS
331 corequisite: PHYS 326. PHYS 332 prerequisite: PHYS 331. PHYS 331: Spring.
PHYS 332: Fall.
5. Delete: On pg 213, in
the course description for PHYS 401:
Prerequisite: PHYS 324. Fall.
Add: On pg 213, in place of the deleted entry:
Prerequisite: PHYS 326. Fall.
Impact: This change will require no new staffing
or resources for the Physics Department.
Rationale: The corequisite for PHYS 331 has been changed from
PHYS 324 to PHYS 326. The prerequisite for PHYS 401 has been changed from PHYS
324 to PHYS 326. In the listing for PHYS 331 and 332, the words “PHYS 331
corequisite” have been added for clarity. PHYS 331 has been added as a
prerequisite for PHYS 332 for clarity.
