Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 23: Clarify
expected time of completion for MLA 680
Effective Date:
Fall 2007
1. Delete: On page
189, in the description for MLA 680,
the 4th sentence:
No extensions are allowed; those who
do not complete the project must retake the seminar in the following year.
Add: On page 189, in place of deleted
entry:
Students
are expected to defend their projects in the semester in which they are
enrolled in the seminar. However, students whose projects are completed but not
defended are allowed until March 1 of the following semester to defend.
Students whose projects are not defended by that date must retake the
seminar.
Impact:
The
MLA program does not foresee any impact from this change on program or
university requirements. No concurrences are required.
Rationale:
It
became clear as we implemented the curriculum changes made last year that the
requirement for writing and defending a project in one semester is overly
ambitious. The defense puts a heavy burden on candidates in terms of the time
that it leaves for actually writing/doing the project, as the defense must be
accomplished in time to meet graduation deadlines. The change here makes
allowance for arranging the defense of the project in the following semester
for those students who need the entire fall semester to complete their
projects.
