Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
response to
changes in the Chemistry curriculum
Effective Date:
Fall 2006
1. Delete: On pg 176,
under Concentration in Pure (Theoretical) Mathematics:
Required
courses outside the major—9-11 hours, consisting of CSCI 201, and one of the
sequences:
CHEM 111-132-144; ECON 101-102; PHYS
221-222
Add: On pg 176, in place of deleted entry:
Required
courses outside the major—9-11 hours, consisting of CSCI 201, and one of the
following
groups of courses: CHEM 111, 132, 145
and 236; or ECON 101 and 102; or PHYS 221 and 222.
Impact: The Department of Chemistry has modified its general
chemistry offering from two lectures and one lab (eight credit hours) to two
lectures and two labs (eight credit hours). There is no credit hour impact
associated with this change.
Rationale: The Department of Chemistry has changed its second
semester general chemistry course from four credit hours to three credit hours
to allow for the additional requirement of the CHEM 145 lab. This is a more
typical approach to general chemistry, is consistent with the goals of this
degree option, and positively increases the fundamental laboratory experience
of Math majors without increasing the credit hours required for the major.
