Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
Effective Date:
Fall, 2006
1. Delete: On pg 116, in
II. Required coursed outside the major
11-16 hours: CHEM 132 or satisfactory score on Chemistry
Placement Examination;
CHEM 111,
144;
Add: On pg 116, in place of deleted entry:
13-16 hours: CHEM 132 or satisfactory score on Chemistry
Placement Examination;
CHEM 111,
145 and 236;
Impact: The Department of Chemistry has modified their
general chemistry offerings from two lectures and one lab (eight credit hours)
to two lectures and two labs (eight credit hours). There is no credit hour
impact (the difference in the hours listed is an editorial correction).
However, this will mean that there will be more demand for seats in CHEM 145
than there is currently. The Department of Chemistry has indicated that they
can accommodate this increased demand.
Rationale: The Environmental Studies faculty believe that it is
in the best interest of our students to have more rather than less laboratory
experience in chemistry. Chemistry’s new general chemistry offerings allow ENVR
students to obtain this increased laboratory experience without increasing the
number of credit hours required in their major.
2. Delete: On pg 116,
under Concentration in Earth Science:
26-30 hours distributed as follows: ENVR 105, 320, 385; two
courses from ENVR 338, 381, 382; one course from ENVR 354, 383, 384; and either
PHYS 131 or CHEM 234.
Add: On pg 116 in place of deleted entry:
26-29 hours distributed as follows: ENVR 105, 320, 385; two
courses from ENVR 338, 381, 382; one course from ENVR 354, 383, 384; and either
PHYS 131 or CHEM 231.
Impact: This could mean a one-hour reduction for students in
this concentration, depending on the course chosen to complete requirements.
Rationale: Switching from CHEM 234 to CHEM 231 lessens the
demand for CHEM 234 and will help the Chemistry Department justify removing the
course at a later date. The topical coverage in the lectures will remain the
same and these students do not need the current CHEM 234 laboratory experience.
3. Delete: On pg 116,
under Concentration in Ecology and Environmental Biology:
29-37 hours distributed as follows: BIOL 105 or its
equivalent, BIOL 210 or 211; one course from ATMS 103, ENVR 105, 338, 385, CHEM 234, PHYS 131; one advanced ENVR elective;
Add: On pg 116, in place of deleted entry:
29-37 hours distributed as follows: BIOL 105 or its
equivalent, BIOL 210 or 211; one course from ATMS 103, ENVR 105, 338, 385, CHEM 231, PHYS 131; one 3-4 hour advanced ENVR elective;
Impact: Although the number of credit hours for the
chemistry course is being reduced, it is part of a group of courses from which
students can choose, so there is no net effect on the range of hours required.
Changing "one advanced" ENVR elective to "one 3-4 hour"
elective clarifies the current practice and makes students aware they must use
at least a 3-hour course to fulfill this requirement.
4. Delete: On pg 116,
under Concentration in Pollution Control:
30-31 hours distributed as follows: CHEM 145, 234; three courses from ENVR 331, 338, 354, 362; 8 hours from CHEM 235, 332, and 435 or ENVR
321; PHYS 131 and 231, or PHYS 221 and 222. Students must take MATH 191 and
192 for their math requirement.
Add: On pg 116,
in place of deleted entry:
26-30 hours distributed as follows: CHEM 222, 231; three courses from ENVR 331, 338, 354, 362; two courses from CHEM 232, 237, 332, or
ENVR 321; PHYS 131 and 231, or PHYS 221 and 222. Students must take MATH
191 and 192 for their math requirement.
Impact: Students may see a decrease in the number of required
hours depending on the courses chosen to complete the requirement.
Rationale: The
new set of Chemistry courses provides ENVR students with choices that are more
appropriate for their interests and professional aspirations.
5. Delete: On pg 116, under Earth Science
with Teacher Licensure, in III. Required courses outside the
major:
16-19
hours: CHEM 132 or satisfactory score on Chemistry Placement Examination; CHEM
111, 144;
Add: On pg 116, in place of deleted entry:
16-19
hours: CHEM 132 or satisfactory score on Chemistry Placement Examination; CHEM
111, 145 and 236
Impact: None
Rationale: The Department of Chemistry has changed its second
semester general chemistry course from four hours to three hours to make room
for the CHEM 145 lab. This new approach is a more typical approach to general
chemistry that is consistent with the goals of this degree option.
