Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
Document 43: Changes
in the Drama courses required for Language Arts
Middle School Licensure and
English with Teacher Licensure
Effective Date: Fall 2006
1. Delete: On pg 105, in the Middle School Licensure (6-9)
section, under II. Required courses
outside of Education
Language Arts—9 hours: DRAM 210 or 317; LANG
323, LIT 241.
Add: On page 105, in place of the deleted entry:
Language Arts—9 hours: DRAM 102 or 210; LANG
323, LIT 241.
Impact: Eliminating DRAM 317, and adding DRAM 102 as
an option available to Middle School licensure candidates for the development
of oral language skills has no net impact on the students.
Rationale: The Drama department changed DRAM 317 to a course
that addresses creative activity in grades K-6. It is no longer appropriate for
Middle School Language Arts licensure candidates. Adding DRAM 102 gives the
students an additional drama course from which to choose. DRAM 102 address the
organization, development, and delivery of the various forms of public address
which makes it an appropriate choice for candidates who are developing their
own oral language skills, as well as identifying strategies which they can use
to teach public speaking to middle grades students.
2. Delete: On page 153, the following statement in the section
entitled, English with Teacher Licensure:
II. Required courses outside the major for 9-12
licensure—Students may choose one of the
following courses: DRAM 102, 210, or 317.
Add: On page 153, in place of the deleted entry:
II. Required
courses outside the major for 9-12 licensure—Students may choose one of the
following courses: DRAM
102 or 210.
Impact: This change reduces the number of choices
available to licensure candidates for the development of oral language skills
from three to two.
Rationale: The Drama department is changing DRAM 317 to a
course that addresses creative activity in grades K-6. It is no longer
appropriate for Secondary School licensure candidates in Literature and
Language. Candidates will have sufficient choices to complete this requirement
by choosing between DRAM 102 and 210.
