Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document  29:                              Editorial Change to Chemistry Narrative

Changes in Times Offered and Prerequisites

Effective Date:  Fall 2006

1.  Delete:        On page 76, in the 10th line of the second paragraph of the departmental description:

which can also be certified as ACS-approved,

     Impact:  None

Rationale: While the department would like for this to be true and is working to make it a reality, this benefit is currently not available to students. Having the statement in the catalog would hurt the department’s chances of receiving authorization from the ACS during a review of the department.

2.  Change:      On page 78, in the CHEM 103 description, “On demand” to:

See Department Chair

Impact: None

Rationale: This change brings the description of this course’s availability in line with other departmental courses that are offered sporadically.

3.  Change:      On page 78, in the CHEM 105 description, “Fall and Spring” to:

See Department Chair

Impact: None

Rationale: While important to the department, resources and demand have not been available recently to warrant the regular listing of this course. This change brings the description of this course’s availability in line with other departmental courses that are offered sporadically.

4.  Change:      On page 81, in the CHEM 436, 437 descriptions, “CHEM 436: Spring. CHEM 437: Fall” to

CHEM 436: Fall. CHEM 437: Spring

Impact: Accurately indicates when the course should be taken.

Rationale: Our relatively new biochemists would prefer that students take the two biochemistry courses as seniors and this change, coupled with the existing prerequisites accomplishes it.

5.  Change:      On page 78, in the CHEM 111 description, “Corequisite: CHEM 132. Fall and Spring” to

Pre- or corequisite: CHEM 132. Fall.

Impact: More flexibility for students.

Rationale: The previous corequisite listing implied that students had to take CHEM 111 simultaneously with CHEM 132. While the department would prefer this to be the case, UNCA’s limited course offerings do not always allow this to happen. This change allows students to take CHEM 132 with or before taking CHEM 111, increasing options for students.

6.  Change:      On page 78, in the CHEM 145 description, “Corequisite: CHEM 144” to:

Prerequisite: CHEM 111

Impact:  More flexibility for students.

Rationale:  The new order of courses for the first two years has chemistry majors taking CHEM 144 in their fourth semester along with another more advanced laboratory course. This change allows students to take CHEM 145 in their second semester and will be the first formal and serious introduction to project/process-based learning in chemistry. More information regarding this new course sequence is provided in an overarching rationale at the end of the document.

7.  Change:      On page 79, in the CHEM 332 description, “Completion of PHYS 231 prior to enrollment

is recommended. Prerequisite: CHEM 145” to:

Prerequisites: CHEM 237; and PHYS 222 or 231

Impact: Improves the likelihood of success for students by ensuring they have the proper background when they take the course.

Rationale: Instrumental analysis deals with the use of modern instrumentation and requires students to have an understanding of electricity and magnetism as well as general analytical techniques. This prerequisite change increases the chances of this happening by requiring students to complete Analytical Chemistry and the second semester of physics before taking the course.

8.  Change:      On page 80, in the CHEM 336 description, “Prerequisite: CHEM 235” to:

Prerequisite: CHEM 232 or 235

Impact: More flexibility for students and more efficiency for the Chemistry Department.

Rationale: This change adjusts the prerequisites to fit the new course organization.

9.  Change:      On page 80, in the CHEM 380 description, “Prerequisite: CHEM 235. Fall” to:

Corequisite: CHEM 237. Spring.

Impact: Accurately indicates when the course should be taken.

Rationale: To accommodate the department’s desire to strengthen the undergraduate research experience for its students, research must be introduced earlier. This change indicates to students that the course should be taken in the spring of their second year.

10.  Change:    On page 81, in the CHEM 415 description, “Prerequisite 416. See department chair” to:

Prerequisite: 380.  Fall.

Impact: Accurately indicates when the course should be taken.

Rationale: To accommodate the department’s desire to strengthen the undergraduate research experience for its students, research must be introduced earlier and students must learn how to deliver a scientific research presentation. This change indicates to students that the course should be taken in the fall of their junior year and will give them the knowledge to continue practicing their research presentation until they defend their research (demonstrating competency) in the spring of their senior year in CHEM 408 or 418.
