Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
Change prerequisites for PSYC 328
Effective Date: Fall 2006
1. Delete: On p. 108, the entry
for EDUC 342
Add: On p. 108, in correct numerical order, EDUC 389
389 Methods and Materials for Diagnosing and
Correcting Reading Difficulties, K–12 (4)
Practicum
in diagnostic and corrective teaching in reading.
Students will learn formal and informal evaluation methods in reading as well
as specific diagnostic and corrective practices for working with differentiated
reading difficulties. Students will
become familiar with techniques for developing teacher-made tests and will
examine materials for the tutorial field experience. Prerequisites: EDUC 310,
311, 314, 388; PSYC 312, 318; formal admission to the department. Taken during the professional year.
Impact: None
Rationale:
This
will make clear to students that the diagnostic reading course, capstone for
reading licensure, is in the professional year and follows EDUC 388,
2. Delete: On p. 201, the
prerequisite for PSYC 328:
Prerequisites:
PSYC 101, 201.
Add: On p. 201, in place of deleted entry:
Prerequisites: PSYC 101, 201. Students who are pursuing
Reading Licensure (K-12) are not required to complete the PSYC 201
prerequisite.
Impact:
Waiving
the PSYC 201 prerequisite for Reading Licensure students will not have a
significant impact on the teaching of the PSYC 328 course since the number of
affected students will be low. Nor will the waiver have a significant impact on
the ability of the affected students to succeed in PSYC 328 since these
students will have been exposed to the analysis of research studies in prior
course work. EDUC 310, 317, 313 and 314 include the analysis of research
studies as part of the regular course work (Department of Education Educational
Research Sequence Developing Students’ Research Skills, February 2005).
Rationale:
It
is necessary to waive this requirement to facilitate completion of the K-12
Reading Licensure program for non-psychology majors.
