Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document  34:          Modify course descriptions for DRAM 124, 325 and 440;

Modify title and course description for DRAM 317

Effective Fall 2006

1.  Delete:       On  pg. 95, the entry for DRAM 124, Stage Make-up (2)

Add:            On pg. 95, in place of deleted entry:

                        124       Stage Make-up (3)

Materials, techniques, and purposes of theatrical make-up as they relate to characterization, lighting, space, and décor.  Includes some consideration of beards, hair, airbrushing, and special effects. Even years Spring.

Impact: Increasing the hours from two to three will minimally impact the major.  This change will not require additional faculty, although it will increase the course load for the faculty member who teaches the course.

Rationale: The work and time required for Stage Make-up is in line with the course load for a three-hour class.

2.   Delete:       On pg. 95, the title and course description for DRAM 317, Creative Drama for Teachers

Add:           On pg. 95, in place of deleted entry:

317       Creative Drama for Teachers, Grades K-6 (3)

Theory and practice of teaching drama as a creative activity addressing grades K-6, where the emphasis is on personal development of the participants rather than on performance or an audience. Even years Spring.

Impact: This change will not require additional faculty or resources.  The course will no longer be appropriate for Secondary School Licensure students in Literature/Language.

Rationale: Creative drama techniques are most appropriately used with students in grades K-6, and focusing the course on this age group will allow the students to spend more time developing the appropriate knowledge and skills necessary to use creative drama effectively.

3.         Delete: On pg. 96, the title and description for DRAM 325, Costuming

Add:           On pg. 96, in place of deleted entry:

                        325       Costume Construction (3)

Techniques of costume construction for the stage, utilizing lecture and practical laboratory experiences. Prerequisites: DRAM 121, 122; or permission of instructor. Fall.

Impact: This change will not require additional faculty or resources and will not impact the major or other departments.

Rationale: The new catalog description is a clearer representation of the content and focus of the course.  Adding DRAM 121 and 122 as prerequisites brings the course in alignment with the other technical courses at this level and ensures that students have the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully complete the course.

4.  Delete:        On pg. 97, the course description for DRAM 440

Add:            On pg. 97, in place of deleted entry:

Theory and practice of costume design for the theatre including design concept, character analysis, swatching, sketching, and rendering.  Prerequisites:  DRAM 144, 325; or permission of the instructor. See department chair.

Impact: This change will not require additional faculty or resources.  Students will have to complete appropriate prerequisites in order to take the course.

Rationale: The new catalog description is a clearer representation of the content and focus of the course.  Requiring appropriate prerequisites will ensure that students have the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully complete the course.
