Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
Delete
Prerequisites from MCOM 482
Effective Date: Fall 2007
1. Delete: On pg. 167, the entries for MCOM
343 and 345
Impact:
Elimination of these
courses makes room for other proposed changes in the MCOM curriculum.
Rationale:
MCOM 343 and 345
have been replaced by workshop-oriented offerings, following current “best
practices” in communication education. The material in MCOM 343 and 345 relating
to conceptual and theoretical issues in advertising and public relations was
redundant, being covered in MCOM 384, 492 and other courses. As currently
formatted, MCOM 343 and 345 are offered infrequently; we plan to be able to
offer their replacements more often as a result of the change in their length
and format.
2. Delete: On pg. 168,
from the course description for MCOM
482:
Prerequisite: MCOM 201 or 205; or
permission of instructor.
Impact:
Removing the
prerequisite opens the course to students in majors other than MCOM who may
have little or no MCOM experience.
Rationale:
MCOM 482 has
been integrated into the ILS Topical Cluster CL1, Globalization and
Environmental Issues. The syllabus was
modified to include a broader range of topics and to avoid overlap with other
MCOM courses. The course is now suitable
for students from other majors, and the prerequisites are not needed.
