382 Methods/Management in the Teaching of
Science, 6–12 (4)
Planning, teaching, evaluation, and organization
applied to the teaching of science, analysis of trends, laboratory experiences,
classroom methods and management. Field
experience required. Should
be taken as part of the Professional Year prior to the Student Teaching
semester (EDUC 455, 496). Prerequisites: EDUC 310, 311, 314, 320 (6-9
only); formal admission to the department.
Fall.
Impact: Since EDUC 322 has been team-taught and split
into two sections in recent fall semesters, little impact is expected.
Rationale: Students seeking K-6 licensure and students seeking
middle or secondary science licensure have different backgrounds in science as
well as different needs regarding
preparation for classroom teaching. As a
result of the DPI (Department of Public Instruction) accreditation visit in
2000, the UNCA Department of Education was asked to address the problems
inherent in having a single science methods course for both K-6 and 6-12
pre-service teachers. Since that time,
the science methods course has been team-taught in the fall semesters and effectively
split into two classes, one for K-6 licensure students and one for middle and
secondary science licensure students.
The proposed change will formalize the division that is already
effectively in place.
A
note on course numbering: the current course EDUC 322 (K-12) used to be numbered
EDUC 382 (K-12). This number signified
that it was a “capstone course” to be taken the semester prior to student
teaching. Because it was not appropriate
as a capstone course for the K-6 licensure students, and they were the majority
of the students in the class, it was changed to EDUC 322 (K-12). This course is, however, the capstone course
for the secondary science licensure students and on the advice of the assistant
registrar, Alicia Shope, the number 382 was
resurrected for the secondary course. In
summary, what was EDUC 382 (K-12) became EDUC 322 (K-12) and the current
proposal is to split it into EDUC 322 (K-6) and EDUC 382 (6-12).
