Statement of Faculty Senate Action:
Sense of Senate Resolution Concerning UNCA Staff Salaries
Whereas, staff at the University of North Carolina at Asheville have not received a pay increase from the State Legislature in the past three years, and
Whereas, the UNCA staff currently rank fourteenth among the state universities in North Carolina in average salaries for SPA employees and fifteenth among the universities in the percent of SPA employees earning below $25,000, and
Whereas, the Asheville area has one of the highest costs of living in the State of North Carolina, and
Whereas, the Chancellor of UNCA recommended to the Board of Governors (BOG) that staff receive 18% of monies generated by a Campus-Based Tuition Increase (CBTI), but the BOG excluded staff as beneficiaries of CBTI monies, and
Whereas, health insurance costs for state employees have increased 18% from 2001 to 2003.
Therefore, be it resolved that the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Asheville formally express our disappointment at the exclusion of staff from the CBTI and pledge our support in encouraging the Chancellor, BOG and the State Legislature to address the salary needs of UNCA staff.
