APC Document 33: Mass Communication Visual Media Production Course Prefix Changes
Effective Date: Fall 2004
(a) Delete section title, "Mass Communication (MCOM), p. 162.
Add section title, "Mass Communication (MCOM) and Visual Media Production (VMP)" on p. 162.
(b) Delete Section I. of Mass Communication Major Requirements, p. 162.
Add Section I. of Mass Communication Requirements, p. 162, to read,
"Required courses for the major -- 32 hours as follows: MCOM 201, 301, 390, 490, 492, 494; VMP 205, 303, plus six hours elected from odd-numbered Mass Communication or Visual Media Production courses and six hours elected from even-numbered Mass Communication courses at the 300 or 400 level.
(c) Delete section entitled, "Minor in Mass Communication," p. 162.
Add section entitled, "Minor in Mass Communication," p. 162, to read,
"19 hours distributed as follows: MCOM 201 or VMP 205; MCOM 301 or VMP 303; one course from MCOM 390, 490, 492; 6 hours elected from even-numbered MCOM 300-400-level courses, and 6 hours from odd-numbered MCOM or VMP 300-400-level courses.
(d) Add title line before Mass Communication course listings reading,

Impact Statement: This proposal will not affect major, minor or university requirements in any way.
No departmental concurrences are anticipated as required for this action. These changes will not
affect staffing or course offerings.
Rationale: The changes proposed here are reclassifications of our existing video production courses so that they can be better recognized and tracked in their appropriate category. Mass Communication courses generally are classified as Category II courses while video and film production courses are eligible for classification as Category III courses. This differentiation will allow for more accurate classification.
