Rationale
The change outlined above codifies in the catalogue the sequence which has in fact been departmental practice for the past couple of years. We found that offering CLAS 104 and CLAS 211 every semester led to small classes and an overworked faculty. On the other hand, it is necessary to offer these courses regularly, both for general education and for prospective majors. The above proposal represents the best compromise for us. CLAS 103 is taught, as the current Catalog states, both in Fall and Spring. In the Fall, it is part of a slow-track, two semester sequence completed by CLAS 104 in the Spring. In the Spring, CLAS 103 is taught in the first half of the semester in a fast-track sequence while CLAS 104 is taught in the second half. Two sections of 104 therefore finish in the Spring and are ready to move on to CLAS 211 in the Fall. Thus there is no need to teach CLAS 104 in the Fall semester and no need for CLAS 211 in the Spring.
