Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 4:    Deletion of ATMS 106, 214, 340.

Effective Date: Fall 2004

1. Delete: On pg 65, entry for ATMS 106, Introductory Meteorology Lab.

Impact: No impact to ATMS students. It does not affect UNCA General Education Natural Sciences requirements.

Rationale: This course is not required by ATMS majors, nor does it fulfill the UNCA General Education Natural Sciences requirements for non-science majors.

2. Delete: On pg 65, entry for ATMS 214, General Meteorology.

Impact: None. Students receive in-depth instruction of the topics covered by this course in ATMS 305 and 310, both required for the major. Deleting this course contributes to lowering the total number of hours required for the major and will not adversely affect the program.

Rationale: This course is currently required by ATMS majors. The content of this course is taught in-depth in ATMS 305, Atmospheric Thermodynamics and Statics and ATMS 310, Atmospheric Kinematics and Dynamics, and the duplication is deemed unnecessary. In order to effectively utilize limited departmental resources and reduce the course loads for majors, we propose to delete this course, and teach the content in a lab format in the new courses, ATMS 251 and 261.

3. Delete:     On pg 65, entry for ATMS 340 General Climatology.

Impact:  ATMS 340 is required for Climatology Concentration majors. However, by deleting this course requirement and consequently reducing required credit hours for Climatology Concentration majors, students will be able to take electives of their choice to strengthen their liberal arts experience.

Rationale: This course is only required by ATMS majors in Climatology Concentration. However, we only have 3 to 5 majors in Climatology Concentration in any given year, and the content of this course is taught in-depth in ATMS 420 Applied Climatology (3).
