(C) Students who pass both AP tests should call the department chair for placement.
Add : On pg. 29 of the current catalog, under Notes :
(C) Students who score 5 on either test should call the department chair for placement.
Impact : This proposal will allow well-prepared matriculating students to continue foreign language study at a more appropriate level. It will have no impact on resources.
Rationale : The current course waivers and hours of credit established for Advanced Placement are inappropriate. We find that students scoring a 3 perform well at the intermediate level. Students who score 4 or 5 are well-qualified to enroll in courses at the 300 level. With these new guidelines, we hope to encourage students to perform to the best of their ability and move quickly into upper division coursework. The new guidelines are comparable to those outlined at other UNC institutions.
