II. SPECIFICS OF PROPOSED PREREQUISITE CHANGES
A. CHANGE prerequisites as indicated in the following courses:
200 Social Psychology - from "101 or 102" to "102"
Rationale: The Registrar has advised that the new software cannot handle either/or prerequisites. Given the need to make a choice, PSYC 102 is the more appropriate course.
Impact: None
201 Research Methods I - from "101 or 102 or permission of instructor" to "3 hours in psychology"
Rationale: The Registrar has advised that the new software cannot handle either/or prerequisites. Given the need to make a choice, 3 hours in psychology is functionally the same.
Impact: None
202 Research Methods II - from "101, 102, 201" to "6 hours in psychology including PSYC 201"
Rationale: As a 200-level class, students should be encouraged to complete PSYC 202 as early in the program as is feasible.
Impact: Reducing the required hours facilitates earlier enrollment in this class.
Rationale: We believe the current prerequisites include a typographical error--201 instead of 102. This change simply restores the intended prerequisites.
Impact: None
Rationale: The current list includes 12 hours which is unnecessarily restrictive.
Impact: Reducing the required hours facilitates earlier enrollment in this class.
Rationale: Because PSYC 317 has PSYC 201 as its prerequisite, this is primarily a change in the listing of prerequisites. The Registrar has advised that the new software will not check "embedded prerequisites," so all three courses must be listed in the course description. PSYC 318, the version of developmental psychology for teacher licensure students, has always been an acceptable alternative to PSYC 317, and this policy is now made explicit in the course description. This listing pattern is necessary because the software cannot handle either/or prerequisites.
Impact: None
Rationale: The current list does not include a recommended course covering developmental psychology, ( PSYC 317 or 318) which is a more content-relevant preparation than PSYC 102.
Impact: None - the course is only required for teacher licensure in the K-12 reading program, which also requires a psychology major.
Rationale: The Registrar has advised that the new software cannot handle either/or prerequisites. PSYC 101 is the most appropriate preparatory course.
Impact: None.
Rationale: The Registrar has advised that the new software cannot handle either/or prerequisites. PSYC 101 is the most appropriate preparatory course.
Impact: None.
Rationale: Because PSYC 333 is a popular course for Women's Studies students, it warrants a minimal prerequisite structure. PSYC 102 is the most relevant preparatory course.
Impact: Increases access for non-PSYC majors.
Rationale: The Registrar has advised that the new software cannot handle either/or prerequisites. These courses are most appropriate.
Impact: None
Rationale: Because PSYC 317 has PSYC 201 as its prerequisite, this is only a change in the listing of prerequisites. The Registrar has advised that the new software will not check "embedded prerequisites." Therefore, all three courses must be listed in the course description. PSYC 318, the version of developmental psychology for teacher licensure students, has always been an acceptable alternative to PSYC 317, and this policy is now made explicit in the course description. This listing pattern is necessary because the software cannot handle either/or prerequisites.
Impact: None
Rationale: PSYC 308 has functioned as either a prerequisite or corequisite for PSYC 410. The Registrar has advised that the new software cannot handle either/or prerequisites, which eliminates the option of corequisites. The most effective response is to remove PSYC 308 from the list of required courses and to list it as recommended instead.
Impact: None
Rationale: The change simply operationalizes the existing prerequisite.
Impact: None
Rationale: The Registrar has advised that the new software cannot handle either/or prerequisites. The three 300-level courses listed are foundation courses for a field work placement, each focusing on a different population. Because each student must have proper preparation and a viable placement, the best alternative is to require instructor permission for enrollment.
Impact: None - students traditionally have met with the instructor to secure a placement in advance. The change simply formalizes the existing process.
Rationale: This course requires supervision from an individual faculty member, arranged by submission of an institutional form. The required coursework is listed, but students cannot register for the course without securing a faculty supervisor.
Impact: None
313 Psychology and Law
318 Psychology Applied to Teaching
327 Cognitive Psychology
328 Psychology of Language
368 Close Relationships
409 Advanced Social Psychology
469 Human Sexualities
Rationale: Permission of instructor is now the default situation for students lacking prerequisites.
Impact: None
