APC Document 41:   Elimination of LR101 from the catalog and elimination of the University requirement of successful completion of Library Research as a prerequisite for declaring a major.

Impact:
None.

Rationale:
The combination of LR 101 and LR 102 into a single course offering reflects the developmental evolution and consolidation of the program. LR 101 was last taught in the fall of 1998, and its content absorbed by LR 102 as modified in the fall of 2002. Since the course is a pre- or co-requisite for LANG 102, it may best serve students and advisors by retaining the LR 102 number. It seems less confusing to register for tandem 102 courses rather than for a 101 class to accompany a 102 course.

Impact:
The elimination of Library Research as a prerequisite for declaring a major will greatly benefit transfer students (nearly half of UNCA's new students each fall) allowing senior college students to declare a major even though they are unable to get into a section of LR102. With Library Research a co-requisite for LANG 102 and a prerequisite for HUM 214, the general student population should remain largely unaffected by waiving the requirement for Library Research prior to declaring a major with most students still completing the Library Research requirement early in their academic careers.

Rationale:
The proposed catalog change describes eliminating the University requirement of successful completion of Library Research as a prerequisite for a declaring a major. Major declaration is necessary for enrollment in many courses across multiple programs, and upper level transfer students are often limited in course selection until their Library Research completion. Many such students with previously accrued research experience react negatively to the necessity of immediate Library Research completion, and to their often resultant delay in undertaking major course work for at least one semester.

Library Research is currently a General Education requirement, a co-requisite for LANG 102, and a prerequisite for HUM 214. This status helps to ensure that most students will complete the course early in their academic careers, when it proves most beneficial to acquire library research and information literacy skills in support of other programs of study.
