Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 33:   Changes to prerequisites and times offered for ART 101, 213, 221, 313, 321, 322, 390.

Effective Date: Fall 2003

1. Delete: On pg 60, under the course listing for 103:
Prerequisite: ART 100, 101; or permission of instructor.

Add: On pg 60, in place of deleted entry:
Prerequisite: ART 100.

Impact: This change has no impact on the department's majors or minors, the university's requirements, other departments, or future department course offerings.

Rationale: This is an introductory course and one of the foundation core courses. As such, it is vital that the intended art major be able to take this class as early as possible. Art 103 is not a continuation of the topics explored in Art 101, and therefore, should not be contingent upon the completion of Art 101.

2. Delete: On pg 60, in the course description for Art 213:
Even years Spring.

Add: On pg 60, in place of deleted entry:
Spring.

Impact: This change has no impact on the department's majors or minors, the university's requirements, other departments, or future department course offerings.

Rationale: For the past five years, Spring '97, Spring '98, Spring '00, Spring '01, and Spring '02, Art 213 has been taught every Spring thereby eliminating the need for the wording, "Even years."

3. Delete: On pg 60, in the course description for Art 221:
Spring.

Add: On pg 60, in place of deleted entry:
See department chair.

Impact: This course had been taught almost every semester for the past few years. It is offered above the normal teaching load of the professor as a way to allow majors to continue through the printmaking concentration and progress towards graduation. The result has been to make advanced printmaking more attractive to students because they can progress through the sequence without delay.

Rationale: Due to the small number of students involved (4 to 6 on average) a semester, the professor can work with them on an individual basis as needed.

4. Delete: On pg 61, under the course description for 313

7. Delete: On pg 63, under the course description for 390:
Even Years Fall.

Add: On pg 62, in place of deleted entry:
Odd years Fall.

Impact: Virtually no impact since it is not a required class and since students had the course as recently as Fall 2001. (This was delayed from Fall 2000, due to an off-campus scholarly assignment.)

Rationale: Due to budget cuts, we lost adjunct funding for Fall 2002 and the Professional Practices in Art class had to be cancelled in order to cover required courses for the major, (e.g. Art 100). While this is not a required course, we do highly recommend the course for our upper level majors and therefore (in part due to demand) want to offer it again as soon as possible.
