Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 31:  Change to Bachelor of Fine Arts Narrative

Effective Date: Fall 2003

Delete: On pg. 58, the first sentence under Bachelor of Fine Arts

The creative arts degree program is designed primarily for exceptional students who plan to continue with graduate studies or pursue professional careers immediately after graduation.

Add: On pg 58, in place of deleted sentence:

The visual arts degree program is designed primarily for exceptional students who plan to continue with graduate studies or pursue professional careers immediately after graduation.

Impact : Changing the term, creative, to the term visual more accurately describes the art degree program at UNCA.

Rationale: It is hoped that using this term more accurately describes the art program at UNCA. Create means to bring into being, to make or produce. Of course the art student will make his or her own art. Visual means perceived by vision or relating to instruction by means of sight. The ultimate goal of our art students is to produce work that will be seen. And also, for the student to see the world around them with a new perspective as taught to them by the Art faculty, is another goal of this change. Using this term also helps to differentiate from the performing arts.
