Statement of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 25: Change to descriptions for MUSC 101, 102, 131; addition of new course, MUSC 488.
Effective Date: Fall 2003
#1
Delete: On pg. 174, description for MUSC 101, 102:
Group and individualized instruction in piano designed to accommodate beginners, as well as students with intermediate and advanced abilities. Lecture, demonstration and laboratory. Fall and Spring.Add: On pg. 174, in place of deleted entry:
Group and individualized instruction in piano and basic music theory designed to accommodate beginners, as well as students with intermediate abilities. Lecture, demonstration and laboratory. Fall and Spring.
Impact: NA
Rationale: We have never serviced advanced students in this class, only students who are at the beginner or intermediate level. The basic theory component is an essential component of this course and should have been articulated in the original description.
#2
Delete: On pg. 175, course description for MUSC 131:
Stresses basic music literacy, the rudiments of music, and basic analytical techniques and proficiencies relevant to a study of the elements of music. Includes introductory aural skills. Fall and Spring.
Add: On pg. 175, in place of deleted entry:
Stresses basic music literacy, the rudiments of music, and basic analytical techniques and proficiencies relevant to a study of the elements of music. Includes introductory aural skills. For non-music majors. Fall and Spring.
Impact: None.
Rationale: This course or equivalent music theory background (normally expected of entering music majors) was previously required for declaration of music major. Restructuring of the theory sequence now permits an accelerated version of MUSC 131 content in first half of semester of MUSC 231.
Add: On pg 177, title and course description for MUSC 488:
488 Directed Studio Projects (1-6)
Individual recording, computer music, and research projects realized in the
UNCA Music Technology Studios. May be repeated for a total of 6 hours credit. Prerequisites:
MUSC 486, 487.
Impact: NA
Rationale: We have offered this course as a Special Topics for many years. It facilitates student completion of senior projects (part of the B.S. in Music Technology senior competency).
