Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 23:   Addition of a Minor in Accounting

Effective Date: Fall 2003

Add: On page 155, before "Courses in Accounting," the following:

Minor in Accounting
Students majoring in any discipline outside the Accounting field may declare a minor in Accounting. To fulfill requirements for the minor, students must earn a minimum 2.0 grade point average in 21 hours to be distributed as follows: ACCT 215, 216, 301, 302, 317, and 417. Three elective hours are required from one of the following courses: ACCT 303, 319, 330, 340, 418, 447; MGMT 341, 487.

Impact Statement: These changes have no impact on the department's Accounting majors, the university's requirements, other departments, or future department course offerings. Student's who pursue a minor in Accounting will increase the number of university student credit hours.

Rationale: The addition of a Minor in Accounting is in response to student and other departments' requests for the establishment of this minor. Students majoring in Computer Science and those concentrating in Financial Economics and other disciplines have requested a Minor in Accounting for the past several years. Faculty in Economics and other departments have also made requests for the establishment of a Minor in Accounting for the past several years. Most areas in which a student could major at UNCA also have a minor option. The establishment of a Minor in Accounting would permit the Accounting area to be in congruence with other disciplines within the university.
