Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

EC 3:   Resolution Affirming the Faculty Senate's Mission in Support of Diversity

Whereas the mission of the University of North Carolina at Asheville is to provide a superior liberal arts education for well-prepared students who are committed to learning and personal growth; and

Whereas the mission of the University of North Carolina at Asheville is to provide an education that is liberating, promotes the free and rigorous pursuit of truth, respect for differing points of view and heritage, and an understanding that values play a role in thought and action; and

Whereas two of the Chancellor's three priority goals are to:

Provide an excellent liberal arts education emphasizing undergraduate learning, exemplary teaching, and an interdisciplinary approach to understanding. (Guiding Concepts 1, 4, 5, 7); and to

Create, maintain, and enhance an academic community that is diverse and collaborative. (Guiding Concept 2); and

Whereas an academic community of students, faculty, staff, and administration that is diverse in every respect including, but not limited to, gender and gender expression, race, ethnicity, age, religion, sexual identity, geographic origin, socio-economic background, politics, and physical/learning capabilities is essential to achieving UNC Asheville's educational mission and goals; and

Whereas the "Constitution of the Faculty Senate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville" especially empowers the Senate to act as the legislative body of a faculty having responsibility for the academic program of the institution;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville affirms diversity as one of its primary responsibilities and commits itself to diversity education and to enhancing diversity among students, faculty, staff, and administration.
