Statement of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 22: Absence from Class Policy
Effective Date: Fall, 2002
Add: On pg 37, new paragraph under heading Class Attendance
Students who miss class to travel on university-sanctioned business are given excused absences for the class time missed. Occasional absences of this kind will have no punitive impact on their grades. It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor of the travel plans at least one week prior to the sanctioned absence, and to make up all work missed within a specified time period, as agreed to by instructor and student. However, significant absences may affect academic performance and grades.
Rationale:
Travel allows for professional development of the student, and also promotes UNCA. Examples include travel
to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, travel to regional or national conferences in their
discipline (e.g.s., in Psychology, travel to the Southeastern Psychological Association meeting or the American
Psychological Association meeting), performance of a musical or theatrical production, readings of poetry or
prose, and performance in intercollegiate athletic contests.
