Impact Statement:
This change to the licensure program requirements will not significantly impact future staffing needs of any of
the affected departments. DRAM 102 is currently being offered each semester along with either DRAM 210,
317, or a special topics course (DRAM 373).
Rationale:
This program revision was initiated through discussions with Dr. Scott Walters of the Drama Department and
Dr. Cynthia Ho of the Literature and Language Department and reflects English Standards of the NC
Department of Public Instruction. The chairs of Drama, Literature and Language, and Education concur with
this change in Drama requirements for licensure candidates. This change will allow 9-12 and 6-9 licensure
students to choose from several Drama offerings each semester, giving them more flexibility in planning their
schedules. Students will take one course in Drama, rather than two as 6-9 students are required to do and as
9-12 licensure students sometimes choose to do. Instead students would choose for their additional three
hours of electives from courses in MCOM or Literature. This would strengthen students' preparation to teach
writing and literature. Also the Literature department has agreed to offer a 300-level elective course at least
once per year that has a multicultural or global orientation, strengthening licensure students in their
preparation to teach World Literature.
