Statement of Faculty Senate Action:
FWDC 2: SELECTION OF HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS
Effective Date: October, 2000
Overview:
With the reorganization of the Distinguished Scholars and Honorary Degree Committee (handbook
10.3.2), the faculty no longer has direct input into the process of selecting honorary degree recipients. A
Senate Resolution, passed last Spring, charged FWDC to work with Chancellor Mullen to enable faculty input.
Rationale:
Consistent with the University's commitment to faculty governance and with tradition at UNCA, it is
vital that faculty be empowered to provide the chancellor with faculty opinion about the selection of honorary
degree recipients.
Addition:
One of the responsibilities of the Senate Executive Committee shall be to advise the Chancellor on the
selection of honorary degree recipients. To that end, be it resolved that "The Chancellor will seek
the advice of the Senate Executive Committee in the selection of potential honorary degree recipients."
Handbook impact:
The preceding paragraph should be added to the description of the Senate Executive Committee,
section 10.2.2.1
