Second paragraph, first sentence beginning: A-excellent (four quality points) . . . .

Add:
A (4.0 quality points), A- (3.667 quality points), B+ (3.333 quality points), B (3.0 quality points), B- (2.667 quality points), C+ (2.333 quality points), C (2.0 quality points), C- (1.667 quality points), D+ (1.333 quality points), D (1.0 quality point), F (no quality points), U-unsatisfactory (no quality points), X/Y-no credit, W-withdrawal, I-incomplete, IP-in progress, and S-satisfactory.

Rationale: This proposal originates in "Ad Hoc Committee Report to Senate on Grading" dated Sept. 12, 2000. Rob Bowen chaired the committee. Members were Volker Frank, Forest Davenport, Alan Combs, and Mike Ruiz. The change would allow faculty more latitude in dealing with borderline students, who fall within the gap between two solid grades.

Impact: This change would give faculty the freedom to adopt plus/minus grades in their classes if they wish to. However, those who wish to remain with the current system would be able to do so. The registrar told the committee one major impact on the overall UNCA GPA would be for students in the upper ten percent. There would be a small decline in average grades at that level.
