Impact : This proposal is an effort to give academic and load credit to students and faculty for work associated with undergraduate research projects in all disciplines. Many students and their faculty mentors are participating in undergraduate research at UNCA. Most students and almost all faculty currently receive little or no academic or load credit for this work. We propose a method for students and faculty to receive credit for their efforts. We anticipate that awarding student academic credit and faculty load credit for work on undergraduate research projects will have a significant impact on the total number of Credit Hour Equivalents (CHEs) generated at UNCA. We also anticipate that the generation of addition CHEs and faculty load credit for work that is already being done will generate additional academic opportunities for students and faculty and additional funding opportunities for UNCA. Each change indicated below will have a specific effect on a particular department.
Rationale: One of the biggest challenges of the Undergraduate Research Program is keeping track of students who are working on undergraduate research projects and their faculty mentors. It is important for the university and for the program to know who is participating in this kind of work and how involved they are. This kind of information is used for assessment, for budgeting, for recruitment of new students and faculty, and for fundraising. It is also in the best interests of the students and faculty to be known. Relevant information can be exchanged in a timely manner and appropriate academic and load credit can be given to the students and faculty.
Under the proposed plan, each student who is working on an undergraduate research project would meet with her or his faculty mentor to develop a plan for the project. A contract reflecting the main points of the research plan would be signed by the student, the faculty mentor and the department chair or program director. The contract system allows for flexibility in the definition of projects with a control for quality through the faculty member and the department chair. The contract will specify the amount of credit the student will receive for the project when it is completed successfully.
Once the contract has been signed by the student, the faculty mentor and the department chair or program director, it should be taken to the Registrar's Office so the student may register for the appropriate course. Load credit for faculty will be assigned on the basis of 0.25 Credit Hour Equivalents (CHE) per student credit hour. These credit hours will accumulate through the years. For each 3 CHEs accumulated by a faculty mentor he or she will be eligible to apply for one course reassigned time. The Institutional Research Office will keep a permanent record of the accumulations from year to year and will notify faculty when they reach the triggering level.
In addition to these changes, existing courses in which all students are working on undergraduate research projects will have a "U" added in the section number part of the course number. (This is a bookkeeping change, not a substantive change. For information, the list of courses which will be marked with a "U" is attached).
